JENNY’S BAKERY – SANTA ROSA DE LA RITA

THE COMMUNITY

Santa Rosa is an agrarian community of approximately 500 people in the canton of Pococí in the Caribbean province of Limón with most of the income comes from manual labor in the agricultural and livestock industries. Employment for women is either in a small convenience store, or selling makeup or homemade goods out of their home.

THE FAMILY

Jenny Sanchez is the mother of three daughters. She began her bakery business out of a steel-barrel oven designed by her husband.

LIVES CHANGED

Since her brick oven was built in 2020, Jenny’s Bakery is the only place to purchase fresh baked goods including her signature cakes, tres leches desserts, and pizzas. Her younger brother and sister work with her and Jenny travels to other communities to teach our peer-to-peer training courses.  Jenny’s family has become active members of the Bricks to Bread family by building other brick ovens and are spokespersons for future oven recipients.
